The Flip Side of Addiction

People, especially fans, often talk about their "addiction" to football. Players have also been known to talk about how they were addicted to playing. Recently, on retiring, Dennis Bergkamp talked about the difficulty of "letting go". While, a few years back, another Arsenal player, captain Tony Adams, wrote an entire book on the matter, entitled, "Addicted".

But today we have a story out of India about the use of football to combat addiction.

Says Shantanu Chowdhury, a programme manager with non-governmental organisation Sahara which operates the treatment centre that is using football:

"The game helps our inmates not only to gain fitness but also acts as an instrument of empowerment. It has helped them boost their morale and lead a healthy life." ( Yahoo Sports )

Hmm. Just wait until they really start to enjoy their football. They'll need an alternate treatment for their new addiction.

Cricket anyone?
