Beckham to make Galaxy a Super Club?

Alexi Lalas, President of the LA Galaxy thinks that signing players the
caliber of David Beckham could help make his team a "super club":

"For many people the Los Angeles Galaxy are looked
upon as the jewel of MLS...We play in the best stadium, we have had
incredible
success over the history of the league and we have had
great individual players and great teams. There is a
tradition of excellence...All of this leads to this race to become the
first
'MLS super club', if you will...That is something we aspire to and in
order to do
that you have to have quality players, a direction and
passion, a good coach and credibility domestically and
internationally...Signing players of (Beckham's) stature would be a
wonderful step in the right direction, not just for
the Galaxy but for soccer in America." (Yahoo Sports)

While that may be true, signing the Beckhams of this world will not
make the Galaxy world class. That will only happen when MLS clubs start to
sign current stars instead of fading ones.

When they start to compete with clubs like United for a Carrick, or
Chelsea for a Ballack, MLS clubs will truly have arrived...

MLS needs a higher quality of player

Or a higher quality of star power?

Speaking on the subject of a possible David Beckham move to American soccer, MLS commissioner Don Garber said this:

"We need to have a higher quality of player, and perhaps in certain markets a star player will help us get there."

The Beckham to MLS notion is a ruse. The league only wants more hype and a few more seats and shirts sold. Even if the league does land him, the move will not elevate the league to an acceptable level.

I think that the MLS will never really make it until they are competing with the top clubs of the world for the top players and for the big championships...
