The new president of the Canadian Soccer Association, Colin Linford, wants Canaidans to get behind their team at next summer's Under 20 FIFA World Cup.
“I really need to see those Maple Leafs flying from car windows,” he said.
He also wants talented young Canadian players to start changing the way the see their national team:
“I want the young players in Canada to say ‘I want to play for Canada, I do not want to play for the country my father came from, my mother came from, my grandfather came from.’ I need them to play for Canada. And if that happens, then Canadian soccer will move forward and we will have the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup in future years.” ( Toronto Star )
It's a tough job given how poorly the CSA has managed all aspects of the game over the years. From lack of a pro league, to poor facilities, to outdated coaching methods, its the CSA which has really failed Canadian soccer by not showing the leadership required.
But Linford is right. And the time is right. The question is who is going inspire this Canadian soccer renaissance that the new president is demanding?
