Only Winning is Beautiful

After all of the talk of "the beautiful game" in this World Cup, those are the words of France coach Raymond Domenech in the BBC after his side lost the big prize to Italy on penalties:

"I don't have the heart to remember the good things right now. Only the disappointment at the moment...I am deeply disappointed. We deserved the title based over the whole match...Only victory is beautiful and we missed out just by a little thing. We can say it wasn't too bad but it is the Italians who are the world champions...They played for the penalties because that was the only option for them."

Winning certainly adds a whole level of emotion to the beautiful game. Everything looks better, brighter, more colorful, happier.

I can understand why the France coach feels that way so soon after the biggest match of his life...
