1. Pele
2. Maradonna
3. Ronaldo
In the wake of his public flogging prior to and during this World Cup, I think that this is a fair question to ask.
Ronaldo has been in terrible form, looking old and slow and depressed and still not looking normal even after two goals against Japan.
But the fact is that he did score two and that he has scored consistently in the past. And I don't think he has scored simply because he played with great Brazil teams and players. The ball didn't go in off of his butt all of those times. He is one of the best strikers of all time--based on ability. My favourite goal of his was the toe-poke that tricked Khan in the 2002 final.
While you could say he belongs in the top 5 of all time, I would put an asterisk beside his name for now due to some of his weird performances: the final against France in 1998 and the opening match against Croatia in 2006.
The thing about it is I really like Ronaldo but he could have been even greater...
Let's hope that he continues to grow in fitness and confidence in this World Cup. It would make for a great story about the player and the coach who helped him along...
Stronger performances, more goals and a sixth World Cup (Hexa) for Brazil and Ronaldo will be cemented in the top 5 for me.
