Argentina goes for the achilles

The Holland-Argentina match went pretty much as expected: two classic powerhouses who didn't really care whether they met Mexico or Portugal in the next round.

Watching this game reminded me that it's in the knock out stages where the real football begins. The group stages have been quite entertaining but the knock out stages will be more cagey like yesterday's match.

Still, yesterday there were nice little glimpses of play, particularly from the likes of Maxi Rodrigues and Riquelme. Messi on the other hand looked a bit the way Ronaldinho has looked: half holding back, half denied any time or space or comfort on the ball.

Like you, I think that as they go on the Argentines will be more and more "formidable".

One comment: as much as I'm very impressed by the quality of the Argentines in every area, I was left at the end asking why in the 90th minute Mascherano had to deliberately slice at Boulahrouz's achiles with his studs--at the half-way line!!! There was no need for it. This type of play is for me a straight red and leaves me liking the Argentines a little less...though still favouring them at this point to win it all... and perhaps more so (though I don't like this type of play) because they tend to go for the achilles and get away with it...
