Ex-England captain and centreback, Terry Butcher says in the BBC that he is unrepentant about his opinion that David Beckham should be dropped from England's eleven:
"Beckham has contributed to quite a few goals recently but I look at the England team and I think it is strangulated. It is constricted...There is no freedom, there is no expansion, there is no free-flowing football as you have seen from Mexico and Argentina and as you have seen from Germany...And yet if you look at the players there is all that there."
This has been my analysis all along. Beckham gets in the way of the kind of football England could play and needs to play in order to win the cup. While Beckham scored the winner yesterday, I think that it is more likely that England would be beating teams like Ecuador by two clear goals, if their formation and style was enhanced by his absence...
