With everyone anticipating the upcoming Champions League rematch between Barcelona and Chelsea, a Blues spokesman today made comments regarding the poor state of the Stamford Bridge pitch.
The spokesman who explained that Chelsea would not re-sod the pitch mid-season becuase the approach did not take last season, said, "I'm certain the players would prefer to play on a pristine pitch," (BBC 09.02.2006)
It's true. In fact pro players are these days accustomed to playing not just on pristine but on perfect pitches. My feeling? That the great players of both teams will adapt. But. But. The advantage goes to Chelsea because English teams may be a little more accustomed to playing in mud and dirt. And if there is rain on game day, the advantage is definitely to Chelsea.
Is Mourinho behind all this then, my little conspiracy theorists? You bet ya. The state of the pitch is the opening salvo in what should prove to be another war between the two sides. The mouth waters.
