Long ball Chelsea? It is a misconception and I am with Mourinho on this one as he defends himself against Barcelona's criticism of their style: "They say we are a long-ball team because they have not seen us play many times...It's not true - and especially because they don't see other English play. I can tell you we play very short." (BBC 22.02.2006)
Chelsea play a strong possession game with much more linkage than any of their Premier League opponents. The thing they do which is just smart football is that they play into their target man, say Drogba, when it is opportunistic for them to do so. And most often that ball into the target man is very precise and very deliberate. The ball that gets played long into a Chelsea target man is less frequent and of much higher quality than say the balls being booted up the pitch from Neville to van Nistelrooy or Carragher to Crouch.
